The Green House will  be at Academy of the Pacific for their annual fundraising luau on April 16th.  This year the money they raise will help move the school towards its “sustainablilty” goals.   The Green House will be holding two hands-on workshops that will be instructional and also provide the manpower needed to create a compost pile and rain barrel catchment system on campus.  We will provide the instruction, you will provide the labor to help “green” AOP and the funds we raise will help them with future projects!  A new take on “barn” raising...join us and help AOP go GREEN!

Week 1 - Back to Nature - August 3 - 7

Spend a week in the garden, learning about butterflies, worms, and other creatures that we'll discover. Learn about the life of a seed, how to make your own soil, and how to plant and care for a garden. Explore the wonders that our planet holds, from the mountains to the sea, within our islands and beyond. Activities will include a garden scavenger hunt, life cycle discussions, compost pile building, and garden planting, plus lots of art activities to nurture the creative mind.

Week 2 - The Human Footprint - August 10 - 14
Let's take a closer look at the choices we make every day. From energy and water use to the clothes we wear and the foods we eat, each of us has an impact on our planet. Activities for this week include papermaking and natural dyes, making and cooking with a solar oven and solar dehydrator, and redesigning old t-shirts into reusable bags or unique works of wearable art! Students will gain a real understanding of what it means to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and how to be better stewards of the Earth.

Daily activities include guided exploration and hands-on learning activities, arts & crafts, games, snack and lunchtime. Each week will culminate with a special celebration where we'll treat the kids to a fun and memorable cooking class, focusing on healthy local foods and waste-free meals!

The Green House Staff: Four, first-aid trained, adult supervisors will be on hand at all times to create a safe and fun learning environment for students. Children will be grouped with their peers for participation in age-appropriate activities.

Ages: 4 - 12 years
Hours: 9:00 am - noon
Days: Monday through Friday

Cost: $150 per child per week, due upon registration confirmation
Parents must provide a snack and lunch

We also encourage you to bring seeds, plants and cuttings to share. By sharing knowledge and our bounty we can rebuild our communities one garden at a time. Dinner prepared using organic, local, "low mileage" food by Chef Raul Bernal

We will be meeting again at Pauoa School Cafeteria; please bring a cup, bowl, plate, silverware and napkin. Your food waste will be donated to our hungry worms. Your waste will soon be fresh compost for another garden...

We began our garden series last year with a wonderful group of people all eager to begin the process of turning their lanai or yard into a garden of delights. We will begin this year with a monthly series focusing on the steps necessary to create a garden. The first step is the dirt under our feet, the wonder of healthy soil. Join us, and some experts with dirt under their fingernails, in a dinner-discussion on the process of creating soil. Together we can rebuild our communities one garden at a time. "Worms Eat My Garbage" Keiki Style

In this workshop your keiki we will get "up close and personal" with worms, learning how our organic waste can be made into compost by feeding it to worms that eat food scraps, cardboard, newspaper, and junk mail and learn all kinds of interesting facts about these wiggily creatures. We will also learn how to make a worm "home" out of recycled containers.

The gigantic biotech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years. The endless list of genetically modified seeds sold and controlled by Monsanto are putting at enormous risk age-old agricultural patterns under the presumptuous slogan of aiming at solving the huge problem of hunger in the world.  A discussion will follow with Meleana Judd from Hawaii SEED: a statewide non-profit dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture and educating about the risks genetic engineering pose to
the health of our Islands.
