About The Green House
The Green House currently fulfills its mission by offering classes in sustainable living practices to children and adults with an emphasis on hands-on community learning. We offer classes in gardening and composting, art from nature, recycle art, “green” urban living, and renewable energy. Classes are taught at The Green House and in schools.
Since 2004, over 4500 young people in 40 public, private and charter schools on O’ahu have benefited from in-school and after-school enrichment activities offered by The Green House. Hundreds of weekend workshops have also been held at our Pauoa center, where parents and children learn together as a team, and families and communities are empowered to become more self-sufficient and environmentally aware. Our programs continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of the community.
Programs
In 2006, The Green House began a partnership with the Kokua Hawaii Foundation's 'Aina In Schools Program, bringing standards-based and hands-on gardening education to elementary schools across O’ahu.
The Green House is working in partnership with The Forward Foundation to bring our Learning Environmental Awareness Program (LEAP) to middle and high schools throughout Honolulu. This after-school program addresses the issues of teen pregnancy and drug abuse by offering young people an exciting alternative to unfocused afternoon activities. Since 2008, LEAP has connected trained professionals with students during regular weekly visits, where students participate in engaging workshops on the subjects of gardening, composting, aquaponics, cooking, waste reduction, renewable energy, and recycle art.
Awards
In August of 2007, The Green House was presented with the “Educational Resource” Award at the “Who's Keeping Hawai'i Green” Awards Ceremony. We were selected by an advisory panel that included architects, businesses and industry groups. The advisors carefully reviewed 15 criteria, including sustainability (both track record and future potential impact), innovation, extent of environmental and economic impact, and viability.
Working for a Better World
Young and old alike enjoy the natural, creative, and fun experiences they gain via The Green House workshops. While these critical elements are becoming increasingly absent from our busy working lives and rigid school environments, The Green House plays a unique and important role by restoring them in our schools, workplaces, and homes. Our students, young or old, develop their sense of social and environmental responsibility as they learn to take their place as part of the “whole.” Let's all do our part to create a more peaceful and sustainable Hawai’i. Come learn with us!
