Summer EcoExplorer Day Camp
Monday to Friday from 9am – 1pm, your keiki will love learning to care for themselves and the `aina at EcoExplorer Adventure Camp. Camp activities will inspire appreciation for the natural world through exploration and hands-on/hands-dirty activities. Keiki will plant a garden; harvest vegetables & herbs; build and cook with a solar oven; strengthen yoga skills; get to know plants, insects and one another; and create arts and crafts using recycled materials. These activities will cultivate seeds for growing a lifelong relationship with the earth.
Ages: 5 - 7 junior explorers, 8 - 10 junior leaders
Hours: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Days: Monday - Friday
Location: The Green House in Pauoa Valley, Honolulu. Located at 224 Pakohana Street
Registration Deadline: May 3, 2013 (Class limited to 12 keiki per session)
Session 1
Plant a Garden
June 3 - 7 & August 5 - 9
OUTDOOR EXPLORATION: Let’s plant a garden!! We’ll collect and plant seeds, learn about sprouting,
planting basics, using & caring for garden tools, raising butterflies and planting a pollinator garden. Learn
how to use simple tools to build a butterfly and bird habitat, create a wormery, and feed The Green
House chicken. PLAY: We will go on scavenger hunts, learn songs, and do yoga in the garden. ART: Learn
about plants used for dyeing kapa and how to create them, make nature masks, and explore nature
crafts. FOOD: Taste foods from the garden and make salsa and pesto.
Session 2
Dirt, Bugs & Water
June 10 - 14
OUTDOOR EXPLORATION: Get your hands dirty making compost piles and caring for worms, explore
insects and other critters living around The Green House, and learn about the role water plays in giving
life. PLAY: Go on critter hunts and enjoy eco games and yoga in the park. ART: Turn plants into paper,
create a journal using handmade paper, and explore the garden through the lens of a camera. FOOD:
Make smoothies and fresh juices, and create dips using plants from the garden.
Session 3
Harvest Time
June 17 - 21 & August 12 - 16
OUTDOOR EXPLORATION: Build and cook in a solar oven, harvest plants and the compost pile, create
a butterfly garden. PLAY: Enjoy eco games in the park, have magnifying glass adventures and explore
nature photography in the neighborhood. ART: Make cookie crayons and candles, press flowers, create eco
envelopes and eco pledges. FOOD: Learn to grind nuts into nut butter, churn cream into butter, grind
corn and make corn bread and create a harvest feast.
